as a means of determining the classification in most instances, and in doubtful cases the question can almost always be settled by staining and examining a film?a proceeding well within the power of all. Ulcers are divided into (A) Traumatic; (B) Primary and (C) Secondary Corneal infections, and (D) Ulcerations due to tropic disturbances, desiccation or degenerative processes. The primary corneal infections include (1) pneumococcal ulcer (typical hypopyon or serpiginous ulcer), (2) a typical hypopyon keratitis, and (3) Mooren's ulcer rodens. Secondary corneal infections include (1) diplobacillary ulcers, (2) a Zur Nedden's infectious marginal ulcers, (8) ulcers occurring in acute conjunctivitis (Kock-Wulls strepto-coccal and staphyloccecal conjunctivitis), diphtheria and gonorrhoea, and (4) ulceration in conjunctivitis

Prevention of stromal ulceration in the alkali-burned rabbit cornea by glued-on contact lens. Evidence for the role of polymorphonuclear leukocytes in collagen degradation.

Stromal ulceration of the alkali-burned rabbit cornea was found to be associated invariably with phagocytically active polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs). A glued-on methylmethacrylate lens applied to corneas soon after burning, however, prevented re-epithelialization and also prevented PMN infiltration of the stroma and stromal ulceration. Subsequent partial detachment or complete removal of ...

Ulceration of the cornea in rheumatoid arthritis.

Five patients with melting of the cornea in association with rheumatoid arthritis are described. The arthritis was often inactive and without systemic manifestations, in contrast to that seen in association with scleritis. In 3 there was evidence of reduced tear formation, but in none was tear production absent. In 3 patients the lesions healed during treatment with azathioprine or penicillamine.

Prevention by medroxyprogesterone of perforation in the alkali-burned rabbit cornea: inhibition of collagenolytic activity.

The incidence of perforation and deep ulceration of the alkali-burned rabbit cornea was substantially reduced by topical or parenteral administration of medroxyprogesterone. The mode of action of the hormone is probably at least in part related to its suppressive effects on production of tissue collagenase, as indicated by the considerable reduction in collagenolytic activity by living explants...
